Road to the Horse has a passion for inspiring the next generation of horsemen and women and was proud to produce in partnership with the Idaho Horse Expo the 2024 Collegiate Colt Starting Challenge held April 5-7 at the Ford Idaho Horse Park. This event created a valuable learning experience in the art of colt starting for three collegiate teams who were able to compete for their share of the $6,000 cash purse.

The collegiate teams that participated were Treasure Valley Community College, coached by Suzannah Campbell; Treasure Valley Community College, coached by Wade Black); and the University of Montana Western, coached by Eric Hoffmann. Donating their time to the event were judges Chloe Cuddie Hudson, Benjamin Longwell, Noel McQuigg, Tim Phillips and Leo Van Sistine.

“There is no better way to create a legacy, than to invest in the future,” states Road to the Horse Director of Operations, Tammy Sronce. “We were honored to work with the Idaho Horse Expo to create an amazing platform to showcase the region’s top collegiate teams. The horsemanship and sportsmanship displayed by all three teams was inspiring to all.”

Over the course of the event, each team partnered with a filly from Bar 71 Ranch. The competition consisted of three round pen sessions, with the challenge accumulating on the final round which included both rail work and an obstacle course. All collegiate teams displayed superb horsemanship in a close competition that came down to the final round to determine the winner.

The University of Montana Western claimed wins in rounds one, three and four. Treasure Valley took the top score in Round Two. Feather River displayed impressive horsemanship throughout all rounds with a sensitive filly and left fans in awe of their progress during the finals.

In addition to participating in the colt starting challenge, students and spectators enjoyed educational clinics from Wade Black and Ken McNabb.

“Winning the Collegiate Colt Starting Challenge means the world to us as a team. It showed us that working together as a team and believing in one another enables us to achieve anything when we put our mind to it” Coach Hoffmann said. “The ability to bring this win back to University Montana Western will mean so much to the University, the Natural Horsemanship Program and the community. It’s not just a win for the team, but for everyone who has worked so hard for the program over the years.”

The first rodeo performance is slated for July 20 at 7:30 p.m. at the Days of ’47 Arena at the Utah State Fairpark in the heart of Salt Lake City. Action will continue daily through July 24 when medalists in each rodeo discipline will be crowned.

The Road to the Horse 2020 Collegiate Colt Starting Challenge was held in conjunction with the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo on February 5 and 6, 2020. In a spectacular display of horsemanship, North Central Texas College, Texas Tech and West Texas A&M University went head to head in a competition that came down to the wire. True to the traditional Road to the Horse format, collegiate ranch horse teams, each consisting of three full time students, gentled 6666 Ranch fillies over four rounds of competition. During a thrilling final round, each team’s relationship with their filly was tested in a challenging obstacle course.

Road to the Horse has a passion for education. From its inception in 2003, Road to the Horse has been driven to inspire and educate fans on the fundamentals of natural horsemanship. Creating a solid foundation is a key principle of Road to the Horse and there is no place more fitting for education, than in the collegiate equestrian arena.

“The talent and collaboration witnessed from each ranch horse team was truly impressive,” stated Western Horseman Publisher Ernie King. “Every team finished the obstacle course with time to spare. This was a direct reflection of the level of horsemanship displayed during the competition.”

The 6666 Ranch fillies represented a selection of the industry’s finest Quarter Horse sires including BET HESA CAT, JESSES TOPAZ, ONE FAMOUS EAGLE, PG HEAVILY ARMED and WAGON STAKE. North Central Texas College selected a beautiful bay filly called SIXES STAKE, Texas Tech choose PENATEKAS, and West Texas A&M picked SEES AN EAGLE.

North Central Texas College Head Equestrian Coach Cathy Luse was overcome with emotion and beaming with pride as she talked about her winning ranch horse team, “I just want to thank everyone for their support, I’m amazed by all who came to cheer our team on. I am lucky to be surrounded by such truly talented and amazingly poised young adults. This is by far the coolest, most challenging event we’re ever done. To all involved in putting this one-of-a-kind event on, thank you for a memory of a lifetime!”

Luse’s North Central Texas College team was comprised of Addie Coutts, Kadin Hernandez and Josh Briggs. The Texas Tech Team consisted of Addison Fjelstad  Colton Bacca, Zac ONeal, and Coach Justin Stanton. The West Texas A&M Team featured Jennay Terrell, Isaiah Chandler, Wyatt Dushay, and Coach Nate Wolf.

Wyatt Dushay from West Texas A&M University was awarded the Sportsmanship Award, an honor voted on by fellow competitors. North Central Texas College team member Josh Briggs was selected to receive the prestigious MVP Award by judges Barbra Schulte, Craig Cameron, Richard Winters and Horseman’s Host, Ben Baldus.

The collegiate teams who earned a place in the Road to the Horse Colt Starting Challenge are Texas Tech, North Central Texas College and West Texas A&M University. These collegiate teams will now prepare to compete in the 2020 Road to the Horse Collegiate Colt Starting Challenge, to be held during the 2020 Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo on February 5 and 6, 2020.

“There is no better way to create a legacy than to invest in the future,” states Western Horseman Publisher Ernie King. “We couldn’t be more excited to work with the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo and Stock Horse of Texas to create this amazing platform that showcases the state’s top collegiate teams.”

“Stock Horse of Texas is excited to be a part of this new opportunity for collegiate teams. I think our World Show showcased the tremendous talent of these collegiate riders, and I am excited to see how they work together in the Road to the Horse competition,” states Stock Horse of Texas Executive Director Jill Dunkel.

Each collegiate team will be judged on their natural horsemanship skills and their ability to work together as a team as they gentle a 6666 Ranch filly. Spectators will be able to gain entry to the event with their general admission ticket to the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo; no additional event ticket is required.

“The North Central Texas College Stock Horse Team is honored to be competing among such great collegiate equine programs at the Legendary Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo! We feel humbled to be involved with the inaugural Road to the Horse Collegiate Colt Starting Challenge and to get to work with fillies from the historic 6666’s Ranch” expresses North Central Texas College Head Equestrian Coach, Cathy Luse. “It is truly a dream come true and we are so thankful to all those involved in making this opportunity happen!”

“I am super excited to be able to send a team to represent Texas Tech at the first collegiate Road to the Horse Colt Starting Challenge. This is a unique competition that will truly demonstrate the horsemanship skills that as a team we strive to put into practice every day” states Texas Tech Head Ranch Horse Team Coach, Justin Stanton. “Working with a completely trained show horse verses a hardly handled young horse will truly bring out the ability to read and communicate with a horse, and I am excited to watch the Red Raiders show off their hard work and dedication.”
““It is such an honor to have this kind of opportunity to be around some of the greatest men and women in the industry. We are excited to compete at the Road to the Horse Collegiate Colt Starting Challenge” states Dr. Nate Wolf from West Texas A&M University.

In conjunction with the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo and Western Horseman, Road to the Horse is proud to host the very first Road to the Horse Collegiate Colt Starting Challenge which will take place in Fort Worth Texas on February 5 and 6, 2020.

Held in conjunction with the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo, three top collegiate teams will each gentle a 6666 Ranch filly, over two days of competition. The teams will earn their spot during the Stock Horse of Texas World Championship Show, which is held on October 25 – 27, 2019. The two top teams finishing in Division l, and the top team from Division ll, will have the opportunity to compete for Road to the Horse scholarships and prizes. Stock Horse Team Coaches will select the team members who will represent their college or university in the Road to the Horse 2020 Collegiate Colt Starting Challenge from the student body.

“There is no better way to create a legacy, than to invest in the future” states Western Horseman Publisher Ernie King. “We couldn’t be more excited to work with the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo and Stock Horse of Texas, to create an amazing platform to showcase the nation’s top collegiate teams. We invite everyone to join us at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo as we present the very first Road to the Horse Collegiate Colt Starting Challenge.”

“Stock Horse of Texas is very excited to be a part of this new collegiate competition” states Stock Horse of Texas Executive Director Jill Dunkel. “We have offered collegiate programs for the last fifteen years and working with Western Horseman and Road to the Horse on this project is a great way to expand opportunities for collegiate riders.”

Spectators will be able to gain entry to the event with their general admission ticket to the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo, no additional event ticket is required.

“The Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo is proud to host the inaugural Road to the Horse Collegiate Colt Starting Challenge,” states Stock Show Horse Show Manager, Lauren Lovelace Murray. “A colt starting competition will highlight the great work of these outstanding collegiate equine programs and adds an exciting new dimension to the educational experiences their students will encounter.”
