McLean performed as an entertainer on September 22-25 at the Road to the Horse Wild Card Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas, where it was revealed, he would return as a Championship Competitor at Road to the Horse 2023 to compete for the World Championship of Colt Starting title.

“Fans fell in love with Guy McLean when he won his first Road to the Horse World Championship in 2012” states Morris Equine Group President Tina Battock. “Guy’s lifelong dedication to make the world a better place for the horse, perfectly aligns with the mission and vision of Road to the Horse. It’s such an honor to welcome him back.”

McLean’s devotion to the horse, paired with his passion for young horse development, has earned the Australian horseman two Road to the Horse World Championships in 2012 (as part of Team Australia) and 2013. McLean gave his very best those years, but he believes he has continued to advance his colt starting knowledge.

 “Over covid (lockdown), I started a lot of babies and went back to being an educator, and I do believe my method has improved” explained Guy McLean to fans during the Wild Card Challenge event. “In 2012 and 2013, I gave my very best and left my heart out on the line. Ten years later, I believe my very best is better, and I’d love to come back (to compete).”

Guy McLean will join Road to the Horse Wild Card Champion JR Robles, as a Championship Competitor. JR Robles secured his place as a Road to the Horse 2023 Championship Competitor by winning the Wild Card Challenge on September 22-25 in Fort Worth, Texas. Additional Championship Competitors will be announced shortly.

Road to the Horse is proud to welcome these six talented colt starters to the Wild Card roster: Amanda Wilson, Kelsey Love Thomas, Nate Eicher, Lee Hart, Daniel Oliveira, and JR Robles.

The Purpose

The purpose of Road to the Horse is to identify the superior colt starter who accumulates the highest score throughout the competition. Scores are calculated on a point-based system by a panel of five highly respected judges. Judging focuses on the competitor and the effectiveness of their horsemanship methodology to communicate, educate, and build a partnership with their colt based on trust. 

The Format

During Round One and Round Two, the Wild Cards will be randomly divided into two sessions. Three Wild Cards will compete in the morning Session A. The remaining three will follow in the afternoon as Session B. During each session, there will be three round pens in the arena, with Wild Cards competing simultaneously.

Dividing the competitors into two groups, allows judges to fully concentrate on each Wild Card. The competitors will rotate round pens each day, allowing fans an up-close view of each Wild Card from the sameseat.

“I have two wonderful World Champions from the (Road to the Horse) competition, Mate and Aussie,” states two-time Road to the Horse World Champion, Guy McLean. “I’m excited to be there and share my proud country and the beautiful horses we have.”

The Road to the Horse Wild Card Challenge will feature six competitors, colts from the legendary 6666 Ranch and a cash purse of over $25,000. The Wild Card Challenge Champion will also be awarded an invitation to compete as a Championship Competitor at Road to the Horse 2023, where they will battle for their share of the $125,000 cash purse.

As a Featured Performer, Guy McLean will entertain fans during the Wild Card Challenge Opening Ceremonies, and will also host a clinic on Saturday, September 24. A detailed event schedule can be found at www.RoadtotheHorse.com. 

Internationally renowned, Australian horseman and entertainer Guy McLean is a rare combination of ‘young horse educator’ and ‘finished horse master.’ His accomplishments include Road to the Horse World Championships, an Australian Championship at Equitana Australia 2005, as well as being named the first Official Australian Stock Horse Ambassador. Since 1999, McLean and his amazing equine team have been featured at Australian events including Royal Shows, Equitana Asia Pacific, major equestrian festivals, international rodeos, the Australia’s famous Man from Snowy River Festival, and Australia’s Got Talent. In 2010, McLean took a leap of faith and flew four of his Australian Stock Horses to the United States to share his beloved horses and country with the rest of the world. He has been part of 12 PBR World Finals, announced The American Rodeo, and been heard in iconic venues such as Madison Square Garden, AT&T Stadium, and The Staples Center in Los Angeles.
Horseman’s Host- Dan James has held many titles at Road to the Horses as a past Champion, competitor, and entertainer. Fans have been intrigued with the roman-riding Australian horseman since Road to the Horse 2012 and he has continued as a staple in the Road to the Horse lineup.

Mike Major – Road to the Horse 2022 World Champion, raised the son of a cattleman and best known for his success with his “stik” horses where he continues to see success in both the AQHA and Stock Horse of Texas show arenas. Mike is excited to bring his 6666 Ranch gelding ‘Yellowhouse Canyon’ to use during his clinic. 
Ben Baldus– Past Road to the Horse Wild Card and successful Reining, Reined Cow Horse, and Ranch Versatility trainer that shows NRHA, NRCHA, RHAA and AQHA money earners at major events such as the Futurity, Derby, National Reining Breeder’s Classic and World Show.

Entertainers

Templeton Thompson is a Nashville singer, songwriter, and lifelong horse girl that has written songs that have been recorded by multi-million selling artists like Reba McEntire, JoDee Messina, Little Texas and more.
Caitlin Holtzman is the Champion of the International Liberty Horse Association’s Invitational Freestyle event at Road to the Horse in Kentucky in March 2022.
Lonestar Cowgirls of Texas is a mounted drill team who ride flashy paint horses in sparkling red/white/blue costumes. The cowgirls travel all over the state of Texas performing at rodeos, parades, and special events.
